a bohemian tablescape

Setting a table with Boho vibes is always fun, which includes an air of casualness but yet with so many interesting details. A bohemian tablescape throws all conventions out the window, but yet creates an inviting and fun ambiance.

Bohemian basically means unconventional at its core. Historically it can have anti-social and political implications, but boho is also associated with creatives and the artistic community. The latter is the inspiration for today.

I love the hominess and relaxed feel of a modern bohemian tablescape. This tablescape has layers that are all about our home and the way we live.

Setting a bohemian table is easy since you simply use what you have on hand and don’t worry about a matching set of anything.

The tasseled and ribbed tablecloth sets a pretty textured foundation for the table. The impromptu mason jar vases and votives are fresh alternative to conventional vases and votive holders.

The collection of herbs for the centerpiece rather than formal flowers grounds the table with a sense of hominess. The centerpiece includes rosemary, oregano and lavender. You can find more information about our vegetable garden in these posts

The plate stack consists of all everyday dishes, which are mixed and matched. None of the dishes are a matching collection, but yet all pleasantly coordinate by color and style.

The napkins are tied in a casual knot at each place setting instead of a prim fold or held by a formal napkin ring. All these little details adds that artsy bohemian vibe.

thoughts of a modern bohemian tablescape

When I think about a bohemian table, it evokes laid back vibes with interesting pieces. The menu should mirror this same type of mood with shared dishes and delicious comfort food.

And although rules are set aside, and mixing & matching is encouraged, just make sure the proportions are appropriate. It’s fun to combine dishes, flatware, glasses, etc. from different periods and styles, but they should compliment each other in scale.

The modern bohemian asthetic has actually reached main stream status in some respects, which is ironic. I think many of us use some boho details at some level, when we set many of the beautiful tables we all love to share.
